I’ve still been practicing daily, but am not always recording, or have been recording in hand-written notes. I’m a bit uninspired by this week of the course which is around measuring and proportion. First, I don’t have a great setup for doing it – it’s best if you’re straight on with both the subject and your drawing, which works best with an easel. I can tilt the drawing board, but also that is not a drawing position I am particularly used to. So I guess I have not really figured out how to integrate measurement into my process yet exactly.

A few things I have thought about / learned this week:

  • Measuring/marking things in multiple ways is a good approach – e.g. measure the length of something and also try to triangulate and angle sight. Helps keep things consistent.
  • In general, do need a lot of patience and accuracy – can get more frustrating from helpful if I “go with” imprecise measurments, because then things wind up not being internally consistent and it’s more confusing than helpful. Each measurement builds on previous.
  • Experimented with more rough angle-sighting approaches – e.g. compare to vertical and horizontal and 45 degrees. Can get you close without relying on perfect transfer to drawing.
  • Paying attention to vertical and horizontal alignment is a good/helpful habit, even if not explicitly drawing/measuring plumb lines. Same with general proportion stuff. Different ways of “paying attention” to a subject.
