Something I’ve been noticing through the process of doing this course: I tend to think about drawing as being about “paying attention”; while that’s true, a lot of the expertise and craft of drawing realistically (at least in Eviston’s framing) is also about understanding the form that’s being drawn, and knowing which details of drawing it are most important for conveying its volumetric character – creating the illusion of volume on the 2D drawing plane. Yes we are paying attention, but not all details are equally important for conveying volume in particular, and there are various “tricks” that can be used to amplify the volume-making effects – e.g. simulated “atmospheric perspective”, darkening lines nearer to the viewer compared to those further away, even if distances are not enough to create this effect in reality.
