Drawing Practice: Day 7
I wasn’t too into the exercise today which was about translating emotions into line. I don’t disagree that this idea is useful in principle, it’s just not really what I am looking for out of this course, I think. I also don’t love his framing on these expressive elements as being mainly about “controlling” the experience of the viewer – i.e. like if you use this kind of line quality you can “make” the viewer feel sad, or angry or whatever. I prefer more of an emphasis on personal reflection and expression.
All that said, I do think it’s interesting that Eviston emphasizes line quality specifically so heavily as a site of expression in drawing, and also that he chooses to bring that idea in so early in the course.
